February 21, 2025 - Bethlehem, PA: In their final dual match of the regular season, and on Senior Night, the No. 21 ranked Lehigh University wrestling team hosted Arizona State at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall and came away with a resounding 25-11 victory.
Lehigh came into the match with a 6-4 overall record so they finish the regular season at 7-4. The Mountain Hawks are currently tied for first place with Navy in the Patriot Division of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Conference. Arizona State came into the match with an overall record of 4-6. They are currently 1-6 in their inaugural season in the Big-12 Conference.
The match started at 157 pounds and saw Lehigh’s Logan Rozynski defeat Michael Kilic 10-4. Lehigh then won the next five bouts as well, including two by tech fall and one by a pin. Lehigh’s Richie Grungo pinned Austin Scott in the first period at 165, Rylan Rogers won by tech fall 22-6 over Arturo Anaya at 174, Caden Rogers won by a 3-2 decision over Shay Addison at 184, Michael Beard won by tech fall 19-4 over Max Acciardi at 197, and Owen Trephan upset four-time All-American Cohlton Schultz 4-2 at 285.
Arizona State won their first bout of the night at 125 pounds when defending NCAA champion and No. 2 ranked Richard Figueroa won a 8-3 decision over No. 16 ranked Sheldon Seymour. The Sun Devils went on to win the next three bouts to close out the match. Damian Moreno won by decision 8-5 over Mason Ziegler at 133, Emilio Ysaguirre won by decision 4-1 over Carter Bailey at 141, and Pierson Manville won by decision 5-3 over Malyke Hines at 149.
Arizona State was deducted one team point for a bench violation during the 133 bout.
Lehigh honored five seniors and their parents/family before the match. The five seniors are: Michael Beard (Reading, PA), Malyke Hines (Kissimmee, FL), Thayne Lawrence (Perryopolis, PA), Drew Munch (East Stroudsburg, PA), and Owen Trephan (Summerville, SC). Trephan’s upset was the bout of the evening and one that will be remembered for some time.
The EIWA Championships are being hosted by Lehigh University this year and will take place on March 7th & 8th at Lehigh’s Stabler Arena. Tickets can be purchased at the EIWA or Lehigh website.
